Achieving Net Zero Carbon - Concept Stage is Key

The UK Government through UK Policy has committed to bring all Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions to net zero by 2050, and as of 20th April 2021, have written into law a 78% reduction of GHG emissions compared to 1990 levels by 2035.

The biggest opportunities for carbon reduction in buildings occurs at the design stage for both upfront embodied and operational energy carbon.Considering the impact of early design decisions on embodied carbon and energy performance at concept design sets a positive direction for the whole project with little or no increase in cost.

A commitment from the client to engage the expertise of the design team earlier in the concept design process is essential, and carrying out building modelling to optimise the built form, improve thermal performance, reduce energy demands and carbon emissions, and improve thermal comfort, is critical in delivering net zero carbon and sustainable building designs.
